MAC says that 500 million people prayed for more of the Holy Spirit by earnestly desiring the Gifts of the Spirit…and God gave them an illusion instead.
Funny thing is, Jesus denies that.
Jesus said in Luke 11: 9-13, "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"
Paul says in Romans 3:4, "Let God be true and every man a liar." Or in this case, let God be true and John MacArthur be a liar.
Rest assured my Spirit-filled friend, it is MAC that stands on shaky ground, not you. MAC is not just on thin ice, he is spiritually underwater, gasping for air, and doesn't know it.
Paul said in I Corinthians 12, "Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant." But like Chicken Little, MAC chooses to stay in the dark on the issue, shouting his ominous warnings from the shadows, "The Spirit is falling! The Spirit is falling!" Then he offers to save us from ourselves by hocking his priceless "Strange Fire" insights for a mere $15.00.
Paul warned Timothy in I Tim 6: 3-5, "If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain."
And in I Tim 5:20, "Those who are sinning, rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear."
Does MAC qualify for this rebuke? Probably, but here is our challenge: Paul also warns Timothy in II Tim 2:24-26, "And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will."
Somehow we have to find a way to deal with this topic in a "gentle" way. It's incredibly difficult to be gentle when someone is attacking what you know to be true. It's hard to be gracious when you feel like you need to protect the faith of your brothers and sisters in Christ, but even more so when you are defending the Honor of the Holy Spirit.
So please read the Scriptures that we quote (in context) and try to overlook my obvious irritation with MAC's attack on the Body of Christ. I, too, have not met Paul's standards on "gentleness" simply because I have a major problem with bullies, especially Pharisees.
But then again, the Lord wasn't too gentle with Pharisees either.
